It's good to be me! A celebration through art community quilt
Greenwood Primary, Kirkby-in-Ashfield (March - July 2025)
This joyful project encouraged pupils of Greenwood Primary School to explore what makes them unique through colourful creativity, character design and collaborative textile art.
Every child created a self-portrait on fabric to contribute to a community quilt celebrating our differences and shared values.
What we did...
We started with fun doodle warm-ups and discussions about what makes us special.
We then designed “Top Me!” character cards filled with facts, faces and superpowers!
Finally, we drew bold, colourful portraits onto fabric squares to represent ourselves in a school-wide quilt.
Top Me! cards
“My super skill is football!”
“My kindness power is 10 because I always help my friends.”
“I’ve enjoyed doing self-portraits and using different materials.”
“Drawing self-portraits has been fun and I’ve been able to express my feelings into a drawing.”
“My score for creativity is 10 because I have lots of ideas!”
Giant quilt display
Each child’s portrait was drawn on a fabric square with fabric markers using bold lines and personal colours.
We added our names, things we liked to do and a colourful background.
When sewn together, they become one big, beautiful celebration of our school family which will be displayed in Greenwood Primary.
Clay character fun
We also had an extra sessions of clay modelling.
Pupils imagined and sculpted their own characters
using modelling clay, cocktail sticks and beads.

From rainbow creatures to button-eyed monsters

Our community quilt
Every portrait here represents someone wonderfully unique.
Together, they form a colourful tapestry of our school, full of kindness, creativity and confidence.
We hope this quilt reminds you: There's no one else quite like YOU!
